In the last version of Counter-Strike, 1600x1200 mode is usuable. In past, CS was a window in my desktop, nowadays CS is an animated background on my desktop!!!!!

MY EXPERIENCE

It is really playable. I win a lot ;)))) I played in the Just Bring It team, an england one, with classment in the ClanBase championship. I play often on england, deustch, norvegia servers.

Some negative points:

dont succeed to use the voice comms feature
cant run anticheat client (grrrr bad servers use them)
menu are very slow to display
sometimes, a wine process comes dumber and cstrike is slower
on some server, i must connect two times to have sound
sometimes, when i use another window and come back in the cstrike window, i loose the mouse action, i must go in the cstrike menu and back to play again

But when you play so many hours, you forget theses 8->
Some positive points:

i have lot of launched applications (mozilla, ksirc, emacs, gnome fish, network monitor, ...)
i can do desktop screenshots
...

In past, i'll use a PII350 with 192Mo ram and GeForce 2MX, it was not really playable cause 14 fps only.
To play well, you must have lot of memory (>= 256), a good graphic card and good cpu (>= 800mhz).

MY INSTALL

Half-life ware I did buy the "Half-life, generation" french version, 2000.

Graphic card
To use my GeForce 2MX on Gnu/Linux, i use NVIDIA drivers. They are really good, with excellent documentation. But they are proprietary and closed sources.

Wine version
I use a old version of wine cause it workfs fine and last version has some lpr packages need.

Wine is a silly project but thanks a lot to all silly people cause i have lot of fun with their great work.

Configuration/Graphique/Mode graphique => choose OpenGl and dont take care for 3d web site dialog box.
Choose a good window size.
As menu are slow, i use XQF.
